HEVIMA Hybrid propulsion system demo vessel due to be launched
The HEVIMA, Hybrid Electric Propulsion System project which is aimed at small commercial vessels is due to have a working demonstration vessel on the water this summer.
The HEVIMA project is aiming to develop an innovative modular parallel hybrid marine power system that will significantly outperform existing hybrid systems for small commercial vessels.
The ferry vessel, the Kingsley II, run by Cornwall Ferries in Falmouth, is being fitted with the hybrid system. The ferry operator is keen to exploit the silent and low pollution advantages of the drive system. The refurbished vessel will be offering passenger services in hybrid mode in August with a launch event planned in Falmouth for Friday 21st September 2018, details of which will be circulated nearer the time.
The hybrid propulsion system that has been developed by the HEVIMA consortium, lead by Southampton company REAP systems. A modular design has been used to minimise engineering and installation costs.
This Innovate UK and DSTL funded project is providing a real-life working vessel to show that this novel system is technically possible and viable.
The system offers significant savings in fuel consumption, engine power rating, weight, emissions, noise and vibrations and has the potential to provide significant cost savings and reduced emissions. The technology has been designed to be routinely deployed to provide safe, reliable and repeatable operations in the commercial marine sector.
