The NEXT GEN Battery Safety Online Workshop will highlight safe approaches to stored energy for workboats, ferries, patrol craft, military vessels, SAR, wind farm support, superyachts and unmanned craft. With a focus on sub 24m vessels, topics will also be relevant for 25m to 100m vessels and the ports they operate from.

Safety for battery-electric vessels is not only about high-performance batteries. A systems approach considers charging, awareness of the risk of running out of energy at sea. Along with the ability to prevent and fight fire that may result from thermal runaway, both onboard and in port.

Besides 100% battery-electric vessels, high-performance batteries are used as part of the power and propulsion system in hybrid and hydrogen fuel cell vessels. Batteries are also used for onboard energy and hotel loads, replacing some traditional ICE generator tasks. As different applications need different batteries, it is essential that marine learns quickly from hard lessons and incidents on land. Small high energy batteries may also be brought onboard in devices owned by crew members.

WORKSHOP THEME: How Can We Make Next Generation Energy Safer?

Session 1: Battery Safety Standards and Lessons from Other Sectors.

Session 2: Technology to Make Battery-Electric Safer on Vessels

Session 3: Preventing Thermal Runaway and Managing Fire Risks.

The unique knowledge gained from NEXT GEN workshops helps to shape real world decisions, from modifying in-service powertrains to shaping requirements for next generation vessels. Attendees include commercial, government and military organisations, boat builders, engine manufacturers, technology developers, engineers, naval architects, class societies and legislators.

NEXT GEN Battery Safety combines international marine energy expertise with dynamic Q&A sessions. End-users and industry come together to identify viable solutions and technology readiness levels. This is an online workshop via Teams, not a webinar, so places are limited.
