The Canal & River Trust is looking for lower-carbon, environmentally preferable alternatives to conventional grouting and expanding foam systems used to repair canal leaks and seeps. Organisations that have a proven solution ready for real-world application could be given the opportunity to trial their solution within one of the UK's most important historic infrastructure networks.

The UK's historic canal network relies on puddle clay liners to prevent water loss, but current repair methods often depend on polyurethane foam-based or cementitious grouting systems. Canal & River Trust is seeking solutions that can deliver the same performance with a reduced environmental impact.

Innovate UK is looking for innovators with materials, formulations or repair approaches that have already been demonstrated in relevant environments and could be adapted for use across the canal network.

Applications close 27th October 2026.
